Squirrel Monkey
Category: Lacey Pullover
Sample garment:
Interlacements Toast Toes, 100% superwash Merino Wool.

This design was inspired by a small monkey native to virgin and secondary forests of South America. They have short, brightly colored fur that ranges from orange to yellow to cream. The tip of their tail is black. They appear delicate in nature due to their size. They are quite small, and are typically one of the most peaceful of the primates.

I chose the stitch pattern for the playfulness of the cables tilting back and forth, as well as the delicate effect of the lace faggotting. The lines of the stitch pattern suggest movement and energy. A green hand-painted yarn (Interlacements Toast Toes) was chosen to reflect the natural habitat of this monkey. Substitutions for this yarn include Dale of Norway Heio, Tiur, or Hauk,Rauma Strikkegarn or Istra (I have had someone also use Finnulgarn),Sandnes Peer Gynt Gjestal Spinneri Vestlands, Lorna's Laces Fisherman Multi or Solid,or other sport/DK weight yarns. Put up is 250 yards per 4oz (113 grams) in Toasty Toes. Please note for best results with this design when using handpainted yarns, a monochromatic colorway or colorway that is nearly solid or close in value looks best, as stitch pattern can get lost in multiple highly contrasting colors.
Finished Chest Width:
36", 40", 44",48", and 52"

Fox Island

Substitutions of this yarn include Jamison and Smith Shetland Jumper Weight, Jamison’s Spindrift, Jaggerspun Main Line Wool2/8 weight and other fingering weigh yarns.

Charlotte
Category: Lace
Stole

Charlotte features two designs, a scarf and a stole (at left) that serve as an introduction to Shetland lace knitting. The scarf is the simpler of the two.

The patterns are not quite as detailed, and it is designed to be a good starting point for someone new to knitting lace. Both projects have a garter stitch border. As Shetland lace is garter stitch based it blends in nicely. Charlotte was inspired in part by the book Charlotte’s Web. Some of the names of the stitch patterns involve spiders or have a spider web type of appearance. I have seen the spider weaving her web tied to lace making so it was fitting to name the stole Charlotte. The sample garment was knit out of 2/8 weight Organic from Black Water Abbey. The sample garment was also hand painted, an option for those of you who like to dye yarn.

Bramble Berry
Category: Cables
Pullover

This pretty and feminine sweater features bold cables and ribbing, which starts crossing over the yoke. This design was inspired by the wild berry patches near the woods on my home. The canes are more vertical as they come out of the ground, then they begin to arch gracefully over due to their length and weight. The birds love this area. The design is knit out of worsted weight in a color as ripe and juicy as a berry. But you can knit it in any color you choose.

Elizabeth I
Category: Lace
Scarves, Accessories

This pattern has 3 lace scarves inspired by Elizabeth I, one of the greatest monarchs of England: Glorianna, Dainty Bess, and Town and Country. Dainty Bess was a pet name of the queen (for her red hair). The queen loved finery, and this design reflects her love of those things as well as her red hair. The stitch pattern is known as pendants. Dainty Bess is from another nickname of the queen. This particular stitch pattern was used in some of her silk stockings, the natural cream color a nod to her reputation as the virgin queen. Town and Country was knit with a Shetland stitch pattern that looks like the patchwork of fields in the country side. She was well loved by her subjects, her universal appeal reflected in this simple and elegant pattern. They are knit from 2/8 weight wool (or Shetland jumper weight wool).

Hickory Hollow
Category: Cables
Cardigan

This men’s design is for my grandfather, who was at one time a lumber jack in Wisconsin. He built a log cabin on Palestine lake and named it Hickory Hollow. The area is wooded and is spectacular in the fall. The stitch pattern mimics the shaggy bark and the nut of the Hickory tree. This design is knit out of worsted weight yarn.

This cardigan was designed with a cabin in the woods in mind, and the meandering paths one finds in those places. The stitch pattern reflects the trunks of trees as well as the branches crossing over each other in the canopy. A perfect cabin in the woods cardigan when nights are chilly, this is knit out of worsted weight yarn.
