Marshfield Sock
Non-Stop Heel Workshop

by Katherine Misegades

This sock pattern will fit a small child, or can be used as a gift holder or ornament for the holidays. It was designed as a quick project to learn the basics of how to work the non-stop heel. The cuff is knit in a mosaic pattern and only one color is carried for each round. The stranded knitting accent at the toe can be replaced with eight rounds of plain knitting if you prefer.

Skills Inventory:

• Cast on
• Knit
• Purl
• Chart reading
• Kitchner bind off

• Lifted increases
• Two-together decreases
• Short rows with wrap
• Two-color stranded knitting
• 3-stitch decrease

Supplies:
• 5-needle sock set (US #1 or #2)
• Yarn needle
• 2 colors of sport-weight or sock-weight yarn

Gauge: 7.5 stitches per inch, 11 rounds per inch

Cuff:
• Cast on 40 sts in light yarn
• Work in the round on double-pointed sock needles
• With light yarn, follow round 1 of Mosaic Cuff Chart
• Continue following the chart through round 18.

Mosaic Cuff Chart:

Mosaic knitting is commonly worked in garter stitch so that the patterns are not distorted, but it may be worked in stockinette if desired. Only one color is carried for a complete round or row and the color-change pattern is achieved by using slip stitches.

Leg: With dark yarn, knit 15 rounds in stockenette.

Heel: Follow Heel Chart to work increases for gussets and decreases for heel turn. Read chart starting with the bottom, right square. This is the center back of the sock.

NOTE: To work the lifted increases, refer to the diagram at the right. Work the right-leaning increase by knitting into the stitch, then knitting into the stitch below. To work the left-leaning increase, knit into the stitch below then into the stitch above that. These need to be worked so that the increases go toward the heel.

Work gusset rounds as follows:
Rnd 1 — knit 10, work right increase in next stitch, knit 18, work left increase in next stitch, knit 10. (42 sts)
Rnd 2 — (and on all even-numbered rnds) knit around.
Rnd 3 — knit 11, work right increase in next stitch, knit 18, work left increase in next stitch, knit 11. (44 sts)
Rnd 5 — knit 12, work right increase in next stitch, knit 18, work left increase in next stitch, knit 12. (46 sts)
Rnd 7 — knit 13, work right increase in next stitch, knit 18, work left increase in next stitch, knit 13. (48 sts)
Rnd 9 — knit 14, work right increase in next stitch, knit 18, work left increase in next stitch, knit 14. (50 sts)
Rnd 11 — knit 15, work right increase in next stitch, knit 18, work left increase in next stitch, knit 15. (52 sts)
Rnd 13 — knit 16, work right increase in next stitch, knit 18, work left increase in next stitch, knit 16. (54 sts)
Rnd 15 — knit 17, work right increase in next stitch, knit 18, work left increase in next stitch, knit 17. (56 sts)

Work heel-turn rows as follows:
Row 1 — knit 2, SSK, yarn to front (YTF), sl1, yarn to back (YTB), TURN.
Row 2 — slip wrapped st, purl 5, p2tog, YTB, sl1, YTF, TURN.
Row 3 — slip wrapped st, knit 6, SSK, YTF, sl1, YTB, TURN.
Row 4 — slip wrapped st, purl 7, p2tog, YTB, sl1, YTF, TURN.
Continue working back and forth like this until you have worked 7 decreases on each side. For the last two decreases, knit in the round and SSK or k2tog as you get to the left then right side. This prevents a turn hole.

Foot:
• Knit in stockenette for 10 rounds.
• Follow Stranded Pattern Chart for pattern band at toe

Stranded Pattern Chart:

Carry two strands of yarn on each pattern round. Each chart square = 1 st. Knit with dark yarn where chart squares are grey and light yarn where chart squares are white. The unused color strands across the back of the knitting.

Toe: Follow Toe Chart for toe decreases and finishing

Toe Chart:

3-stitch decrease — slip 2 sts together as if to k 2 tog, knit next st, pass slipped sts over. The center st lies on top of the three sts. The decreases align with each other as shown in the photo.

Start round at Center A on the sole of the sock. Follow chart to center front (Center B). Finish round by working from Center A to Center B again.
